     Class Descriptions      Program Policies

     A total of nine classes are required for the Basic Program: six required classes and three electives. To recieve the 150-hour Acupressure Certificate you have a choice of any three basic electives. In order to recieve the 150-hour Shiatsu certificate*, you must take Zen Shiatsu, Ashiatsu, and Tui Na as the three electives. Please see suggested class sequence.

REQUIRED CLASSES

FUNDAMENTALS OF ACUPRESSURE

Four-week class or weekend workshop
No prerequisite
12 Class Hours

  • A hands-on introduction to the main forms of acupressure: Shiatsu, Reflexology, Do-In, and Jin Shin
  • Learn specific point location, self-acupressure methods, and Asian breathing exercises


BASIC ACUPRESSURE: Extraordinary Channels and Points
Six-week class or weekend workshop
No prerequisite

15 Class Hours

  • Over 40 main acupressure points and how to use and combine them
  • Learn the eight extraordinary channels and associated symptoms
  • Study point interrelationships, combinations, and formulas


INTERMEDIATE ACUPRESSURE: 12 Organ Meridians
Six-week class or weekend workshop
Prerequisite: Basic Acupressure Class

15 Class Hours

  • Learn the points and direction of each organ meridian
  • Understand traditional imbalances and organ associations
  • Learn meridian pulse reading and traditional face reading
  • Study the body clock; including the use and location of source, entry / exit points
  • Learn about movement and transformation of energy throughout the body


ADVANCED ACUPRESSURE
Six-week class or weekend workshop
Prerequisites: Basic & Intermediate Acupressure Classes
Text Recommended: Traditional Acupuncture: Law of the Five Elements
15 Class Hours

  • Study the correlations between the five senses, seasons, climate, and color
  • Learn about the five elements' interrelationships among meridians
  • Find out about alarm, yu, and source points: their uses and locations
  • Students will also be introduced to moxibustion techniques


ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY
Six-week class or weekend workshop
No prerequisite
Text Recommended: Anatomy Coloring Book
18 Class Hours

  • Students are given an overview of anatomical and physiological interrelationships
  • Learn major organs, musculatures, systems, and bones of the body
  • Learn anatomical positions of acupressure points


BUSINESS PRACTICE AND ETHICS
One day class
No prerequisite
4 Class Hours

  • Covers ethical issues and important aspects of doing business: advertising, taxes, license requirements, fees to charge, professional associations, and insurance.


ELECTIVE CLASSES
ACUPRESSURE OIL MASSAGE
Four-week class or weekend workshop
Prerequisite: Basic Acupressure
12 Class Hours

  • Learn basic techniques of Swedish and Esalen massage. Emphasis is placed on draping and good body mechanics. Acupressure points and meridians are incorporated into a full body oil massage.


ACU-YOGA
Four-week class or weekend workshop
No prerequisite
Text Required: Acu-Yoga
12 Class Hours

  • Learn to combine acupressure points with yoga postures for self-treatment. This class emphasizes working with the meridians and chakras, deep breathing exercises and self-care for common stress related problems.


ASHIATSU I (Barefoot Shiatsu)
Four-week class or weekend workshop
Prerequisite: Zen Shiatsu or Fundamentals of Acupressure
12 Class Hours

  • Learn a full body treatment in both prone and supine positions using both feet and hands. Discover how to use breath and body mechanics. Explore the assessment process in giving Ashiatsu. Taught on floor mats.
  • Required for Shiatsu Program


REFLEXOLOGY & ACUPRESSURE
Four-week class or weekend workshop
No prerequisite
12 Class Hours

  • Course covers foot, hand, and ear reflexology points as well as acupressure massage and reflexology techniques.


TOUCH FOR HEALTH
Four-week class or weekend workshop
Suggested prerequisite: Intermediate Acupressure
Text Required: Touch for Health
12 Class Hours

  • Learn to use muscle testing and points to derive information about structural, emotional, and nutritional imbalances


TUI NA I (Chinese Massage)
Four-week class or weekend workshop
No prerequisite
12 Class Hours

  • Learn 13 hand techniques, self-massage, Tao Yen, T'ai Chi and Qi Gong exercises. Apply techniques and range of motion through clothing, usually on the table. Based on wind and water Feng Shui, a full body approach for the client and practitioner.
  • Required for Shiatsu Program


ZEN SHIATSU
Four-week class or weekend workshop
12 Class Hours

  • This class demonstrates an integrated style of Shiatsu that stimulates points and releases tension in the neck, shoulders, back, legs, and face. Learn how to give a full body session that incorporates range of motion and stretching. Taught on floor mats.

     There is flexibility in the order classes can be taken. You can take the beginning classes listed below in any order. Once you complete a few beginning classes, you can take any classes in the middle of the program. Choose classes that best fit your schedule.
